My name is Madison*, and I just graduated from Madill High School. I currently live in the College and Career apartments at Baptist Home for Girls (BHG). I have three siblings, and we were adopted in 2016, which was a life-changing moment for all of us.
I moved to BHG in October 2022. The reason I came to BHG was because, after our adoption, my siblings and I really struggled to function as a family. We had a hard time getting along, and we often disagreed to the point where living together was not healthy. Eventually, we were separated and placed in different directions, and that is how I ended up at BHG.
One of the biggest adjustments for me was simply being the new girl. I had never really experienced that before. Even when I was “new,” I was still in the same school system, surrounded by familiar faces and routines. Coming to a completely new environment where I did not know anyone was hard at first, and it took time to feel comfortable and find my place.
Over time, though, I began to really appreciate life on campus. One of my favorite parts is Bible study at Lindsey’s house on Sundays. Lindsey McDermott is a caseworker at BHG. I also love spending time with my friends here. Those moments have helped me feel more connected and supported.
Some of my favorite memories from my time at BHG are from the summers. I learned how to make homemade pizza with Mrs. Lieschen, one of the houseparents, and afterward we would go to the pool. When we came back, we would eat pizzas together. Those simple, fun times are something I will always remember.
In my free time, I love playing soccer, weightlifting, and spending time with my friends. Soccer has been a huge part of my life, and I am especially proud that I was recently signed to play in college. That is something I never thought I would accomplish, and I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity.
Living at BHG has also helped me grow spiritually. Before coming here, I knew who Jesus was, but I would not have said I had a personal relationship with Him. Now, that has completely changed. I have developed a solid relationship with Jesus and try to grow in that relationship every day. Recently at Falls Creek, we learned about how Jesus was fully human and faced the same temptations we do, yet He never sinned. That truth gave me hope and reminded me that I can rely on Him in my own struggles.
