Stylin’ for Success

Students Prepare for Upcoming Style Shows

Many children often arrive on campus at Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children (OBHC) with very few clothes, shoes or other basic needs. Some children have either been in hand-me-down outfits or rarely have had the opportunity to wear brand new clothes to school. OBHC provides for these basic needs and many others through their three Back-to-School Style Shows. The biggest events of the year, the Style Show helps support and provide funds for children as they go back to school. Before the children even make it to the runway on Style Show day, the fun behind the scenes happens when they get to shop for brand new clothes of their very own. Two such people, Fernando and Brooklynn, both participated last year as volunteers took them shopping.

Meet Fernando

Before his time at OBHC, Fernando’s family often struggled to pay bills, much less afford new clothes, shoes or school supplies. When he arrived, he came without much to his name. So for his clothing needs to be taken care of promptly, meant so much to him.

Fernando appreciated the volunteers suggesting clothes they thought he might like, helped him find correct sizes and loved getting to talk to them. “My favorite part of the Style Show was getting to pick out new clothes. I enjoy getting to know the volunteers who take us shopping. I like to get their opinion on clothes and see them having fun taking us shopping,” he recalls.

Meet Brooklyn

Brooklynn, another resident, is from a single mother family in the Children’s Hope program. Her mother was overwhelmed with caring for Brooklynn and her two younger sisters, while dealing with her own personal struggles. While her mom received the assistance she needed to get back on her feet thanks to the ministry of Children’s Hope, they were also relieved and appreciative when OBHC was able to provide for the needs of their family.

Brooklynn shared her appreciation to be able to pick out clothes with people who really care. She says, “The first time I got to go shopping for the Style Show, I really liked it! It was really fun because it was one of the first times I ever got new clothes and didn’t just have clothes from others. Most of my clothes were really old and worn out. So when I got new clothes, I received a lot of compliments at school from friends and people I didn’t even know. Things like ‘Oh my gosh, where’d you get that outfit.’ and ‘I love that outfit!’ It made me feel really happy and glad I got to be part of the Style Show. Thank you for helping me shop. It’s really impacted me.”

Witness the Impact

The impact a brand new shirt or pair of jeans can have on a young child is immeasurable. Being able to walk proudly and confidently into school makes an incredible difference in their learning environment and self-esteem. Before school starts, they have the opportunity to share their new clothes with all the supporters who attend these annual Style Shows.

Brooklynn says, “Seeing 1,200 people show up to the Style Show to support us made me feel important! It was really fun and I liked it. I actually felt like someone was there for me and they were helping us.”

Fernando adds, “It makes me happy to know people choose to take us shopping, give money for our new clothes or attend the Style Show. I love walking down the runway and hearing them cheer for me.”

Each Style Show includes a silent and a live auction, a meal, the opportunity to see the children of each campus display their new clothes on the runway and meet them afterwards. Don’t miss your chance to attend one of these special events coming soon!
