Jo and Gene DowningJo and Gene Downing

Recently, during an interview on a Christian radio talk show promoting the Oklahoma City Style Show, Gene was so proficient in his knowledge of Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children; he was asked if he worked for the organization. Gene replied “you might say so.” Gene and Jo’s consistent support encourages others in Oklahoma to support OBHC’s ministry. Because of their desire to be involved in all aspects of the ministry, they have welcomed children into their home for photo shoots and have hosted donor dinners. They are joint owners in their business, Downing Wellhead Equipment, Inc.

They are faithful members of Southern Hills Baptist Church in south Oklahoma City where they serve as Sunday School Department Directors. Jo is involved in the women’s ministry and Gene serves as a Deacon, a greeter, and also serves as chair of the Safety & Security Committee. He is a member of the BGCO Falls Creek Steering and Building Committee.

Gene and Jo married in 1964 and they are the parents of three daughters, Shelley Cooper, Gina Freels and Stacey Armitage. They are the proud grandparents of five granddaughters and two grandsons. Gene is president and pilot of Angel Flight, Inc. and serves as a Board member of Integris Southwest Medical Center, a Trustee of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and has been elected to serve on the 2005 Board of the Baptist Foundation of Oklahoma.

Jo and Gene are significantly involved in the present and future ministry of Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children, specifically the Baptist Children’s Home in Oklahoma City.

Their volunteer involvement in the Oklahoma City/BRT Style Show and their love for children certainly qualify them for nomination for membership in the Gladys Smith Society.  12-07-04
