Hi, my name is Khallie*, and I am 35 years old. I have three children, Eli* (10), Carter* (4) and Lillian* (1). I am originally from Texas, and I have worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant since I was 18.
I grew up around a lot of drug addicts. There was a lot of generational addiction passed down in my family, and that was the environment I grew up in. I am grateful that I am not an addict, but I do not handle life’s struggles well compared to others. I lost my father to liver disease while I was pregnant with my youngest. He passed away at the hospital I worked at. His death really impacted me, and on top of the struggles I face as a single mother, my grief at his passing really took a toll on me. I was depressed and going through a lot of issues from my toxic relationship with my middle child’s father. On top of that, my daughter was constantly in and out of the hospital for RSV – she just never got better. I was so overwhelmed by my life’s circumstances, and it felt like I was stuck in constant chaos.

My sister told me about The Vine, a ministry of Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children. I do not really like to ask for help, so I was hesitant to even consider The Vine at first. I told myself it was a great opportunity for someone else, but I did not need it. However, I am so thankful I did give this place a chance. I needed the support of The Vine more than I could ever know. I have been here since July 2024, and the difference in my life is so noticeable. Ultimately, I am a better mom for coming to The Vine.
The biggest adjustment to living at The Vine is the community living aspect. I am not used to accountability, but I have come to appreciate it. I now have the support I need to not feel so overwhelmed. My children are also thriving. My oldest in particular loves the after school program. It is hard to feel alone here, because somebody else has probably gone through what you are going through.

My Bible study group at Emmaus Baptist Church has been so helpful in my relationship with God. God has been helping me see that I am worthy of change, and I am trying to honor Him in what I do. I am proud of myself for finally getting my driver’s license and starting back to school to obtain my RN degree. I will be the first person in my immediate family to graduate college. With the help of the classes and the support of my family advisor, I am learning how to be held accountable, save money, and be a better mom and provider for my children.
