Department of Child Care

The Department of Child Care was established September 7, 1956, by a vote of the Board of Directors of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. Truman Maxey was designated general superintendent. The department was formed to operate the Baptist Children’s Home, Oklahoma City, and Boys Ranch Town, Edmond.

With the expansion of the ministry, the number of children in residence was 255. In addition to residential care at the two campuses, the Department also supervised adoptive services, unwed mother services, and foster care.

At the 1956 Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma annual convention, Maxey said, “The whole program of child care now combined under one management and one plan of support means enlarged ministry.”
