Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve, 1922, found 9-year-old Dorothy, dressed in thin clothes, without shoes, abandoned on the side of a road near Pauls Valley.

While traveling in a car, the family caring for Dorothy left her stranded on the road in the cold night air. Dorothy was already separated from her biological parents.
This was the second family who abandoned her.

Later that night, a family passing by picked her up and drove her to Shawnee, where Mrs. Mildred Patterson took care of her. Documents show Mrs. Patterson then petitioned the court that the Oklahoma Baptist Orphans’ Home have custody of the child because she had no parents or known relatives. The court ordered that the neglected child belong to the Home, “a fit and proper place for children.”
