Gratitude for the Children's Home

Pamela D. Silk

This story is not hard to tell because it has a happy ending, thanks to Oklahoma Baptists.

My life as a child was filled with a lot of darkness. In fact, I have never been able to remember a lot of details; they have been erased from my mind. This may be God’s way of easing the pain these memories bring.

Anyway, my home life was a living hell. My father was the meanest and cruelest person I’ve ever known. He constantly abused us physically and verbally. I lived in a state of fear 24 hours a day. I can’t remember ever not being afraid.

That’s why my mother and grandmother put us in the Children’s Home. They knew our lives were in constant danger. I moved there in September, 1964, at the age of 12. I stayed until 1970 when I graduated from high school. From there, I went to college at S.W.S.C. in Weatherford.

In 1972, I married Ken Silk. We have been married 25 years and have four lovely children. We are very active in our church and community. This happy ending would not have happened without the love and generous giving of Southern Baptists in the fine state of Oklahoma. I know Southern Baptists truly love because they are so willing to love the fatherless--a group of kids that can’t give, but only take. That’s love!

I had wonderful houseparents at the Home. All were godly people who loved us. Mr. and Mrs. Olen Constant were my favorites because I lived with them all through high school. We still write until this day. Mr. & Mrs. Browning and Kay mean a lot to me, mainly because Kay was my best friend and I was in their home often. I also loved my church, Trinity Baptist. They loved us kids and always treated us with love and respect.

I’m so grateful for the Baptist Home. Thank you for giving me a home when I was a scared 12-year-old girl who needed love and safety. Most of all, I’m thankful I found Christ as my Lord and Savior while I was a teen-ager.
