Nita Childress, 93, of Guymon, passed away Sunday afternoon, August 24, 2014 at the Heritage Community Manor.
The daughter of James and Eliza May (Madison) Yancy, she was born November 5, 1920 in Burkett, Texas.
Nita and William Taylor “Shorty” Childress were united in marriage on August 10, 1938 in Haskell, Texas. They settled in Guymon in 1958. Nita was a homemaker and active member of the First Baptist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher, WMU and Prime Timers member. Her community activities include: Memorial Hospital Pink Lady, election committee member, Meals on Wheels, and local Blood Drive volunteer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Taylor Childress on July 31, 1990; two sisters, Ruth Cagle and Myrel Jordan and two brothers, Newt Yancy and Jimmy Yancy, Jr.
Survivors include two sons, Rod Childress and wife, Raeleen of Hooker, and Lonnie Childress and wife, Nancy of Guymon, five grandchildren: Rocheal Mathis of Hooker, Shawn Childress and wife, Joanna of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Kristi and husband, Zac Cooper of Norman, Oklahoma, Kari and husband, Jason Young of Frisco, Texas and Lance Childress and wife, Ashley of Edmond, Oklahoma. Survivors also include five great grandchildren: Ryan Mathis and wife, Carrie, Shayla Whiteley and husband, Glenn; Kaleb, Asher and Jaxon Childress, two great great grandchildren, Madelynn and Ashlynn Mathis, and several nieces and nephews.
Interment will be Wednesday morning, August 27th at 10:00 a.m. at the Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon. Memorial services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Guymon First Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Carter, pastor and Rev. Trevor Bulls of Boise City, Oklahoma officiating.
The Childress family will greet friends Tuesday evening, August 26th between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the Bunch - Roberts Funeral Home.
Memorials in memory of Nita may be given to the First Baptist Church building fund or to a charity of choice. Memorials will be accepted at the Bunch – Roberts Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1112, Guymon, OK 73942.
