Mary Barber

December 1, 1921 - August 31, 2014

Mary Barber

Mary Elizabeth Barber stepped into eternity and the presence of her Savior and the family and friends who have been waiting for her arrival there, on August 31, 2014. Mary was a 60+ year resident of Bartlesville, OK, along with her husband of almost 70 years, Harold W. Barber. Mary was living in Cedar Park, TX near family there, when she passed.

Mary was born in Avery, OK to Fred and Izetta Gooch on December 1, 1921. Mary never spent more than one full year in any school because her Dad moved around to keep a job during those Depression years, but she thought of Stroud, OK as "the home place" where she spent much of her time as a child. She had no siblings but had lots of aunts, uncles and cousins with whom she grew up, and to whom she was known as "The Kid," a nickname Harold continued to affectionately call her all their married lives.

Mary attended Oklahoma A&M (now OSU), where she met the love of her life at a ballroom dancing class which he was helping to teach, along with his brothers. Harold often told of having his eye on "that cute little auburn-haired girl" around campus before they finally started dating. They were married January 25, 1942 and honeymooned as they travelled to Borger, TX for his first job after graduation. They eventually settled in Bartlesville, OK where they raised their three children: Bill, Karen and Mary Beth.

Mary spent most of her adult years raising children, but she also worked as a realtor and did lots of volunteer work for First Baptist Church. She taught Beginners in Sunday School for about 25 years and spent many years doing weekly visits to her "old people" as she tenderly cared for those who could not get out or who had little or no family to visit them. She helped plan and cook funeral dinners and served in too many other ways to mention. She dearly loved her sewing club gang, her bridge club buddies, the WMU ladies, the Sunday School class and her Green Country friends. She enjoyed helping Harold lead their beloved Young at Heart group for many years and especially relished all the trips the group took. She and Harold also did extensive travelling on their own, to many countries around the world. When asked what her favorite trip was, she answered in her usual positive style, "Every single one!"

Mary was preceded in death by husband Harold, and by their son, William H. (Bill) Barber. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Storm, and husband Charles of Kingfisher, OK, and Mary Beth Johns and her husband Dave, of Leander, TX. She had six grandchildren: Matthew (and Karla), Jay(and Erica) and Carl (and Carrie) Storm as well as Nathan (and Ashley) Johns, Rob (and Mandi) Johns, and Rebekah (and Baker) Galloway. Her Storm great grandchildren are Emily, Chandler, Gracyn, Blakely, Lydia, Molly, William, Grady and Clara. The other great grandchildren are Owen and Nico Johns and Cub and Izetta Galloway. She dearly loved her in-laws and nieces and nephews as well.

Heaven is richer for Mary's arrival there but this earth has lost a kind, gracious and gentle soul who will be sorely missed by many. Her graveside service will be in Stroud, OK at 11 AM, Thursday, September 4 and a memorial service in Bartlesville at 2 PM Friday, September 5 at First Baptist Church. For those who have requested a place to give memorial donations, consider a spot very dear to Mary's heart: Baptist Children's Home, 12700 E. 76th St. N., Owasso, OK 74055.
