Elizabeth (Liz) Lewis, 78, of Guymon, Oklahoma passed away on August 25, 2014 in Amarillo, Texas.
The daughter of Ottis and Irene Gurwell, Liz was born in Guymon on August 12, 1936.
Liz was a 1954 graduate of Guymon High School. She married Bill Lewis on November 30, 1957 in the Guymon First Baptist Church. The couple lived on the Gurwell homestead north of town where they farmed and ranched on the land just as the generations before them. Their son Mark carries on the family tradition today.
Liz chose a career in banking because she enjoyed helping others. She graduated from the Central States Banking School at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and worked at the First National Bank in Guymon for more than 40 years, retiring as a Vice President and member of the Board of Directors. She was a leader in the National Association of Bank Women.
Liz had a lifelong passion for learning and serving. She was the Oklahoma State President of the Delphinium Garden Club and served in many other roles for the organization over the years. Liz was also President of the Texas County Memorial Foundation, a Charter Member and Past President of the Guymon Community Enrichment Foundation, a Board Member for the Dunaway Manor and Nursing Home, and a Guymon Chamber of Commerce Ambassador. Liz was the first woman to become a member of the Guymon Early Bird Toastmasters. In 1983, the Panhandle Business and Professional Women’s Club named her “Woman of the Year.”
Family and friends will remember Liz for her green thumb. She earned the status of Master Gardner and loved tending to her impressive vegetable garden and flowers. She also enjoyed traveling and exploring. At home, Liz was a talented baker. Her homemade breads and cinnamon rolls were a highlight of every family get together. Liz was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church.
Liz was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Ralph and Richard.
She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Bill Lewis, her son Mark Lewis and wife Judy of Guymon, her granddaughter (the light of her life) Heather Rice and husband Justin of Oklahoma City, her brother Kenneth Gurwell and wife Aleta Jo of Borger, Texas, her niece Holly Shelton and husband Chris of Canyon, Texas, and her grand niece Abigail Shelton of Canyon.
The Lewis family will greet friends Wednesday evening from 6-8:00 PM at the Henson-Novak Funeral Home, 501 NW Fifth, Guymon.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, August 28, 2014 at the First Baptist Church, 2201 N Lelia, Guymon with Rev. Michael Carter and family friend, Don Taylor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon.
